Outdoor Learning and Activities at How Stean Gorge

How Stean Gorge stands out from your usual school activity centres; choose from canoeing, gorge walkingcaving, and many more exhilarating activities. Encourage children to take a break from the electronics that they are often surrounded with, and instead give them the opportunity to stretch their legs, breathe in the fresh air, and have some fun!

These educational activities aren’t limited to schools, though. Outdoor education activities are brilliant for sports teams looking to grow the strength of the team away from their usual sport activity. The majority of our outdoor activities take place at How Stean Gorge, meaning there is limited or no need for transport once onsite.

Activities to Suit Your Team

Choose from one of our ready-made packages of outdoor activities, or create a bespoke schedule for a half day, single day or multi-day residential trip. We have every ability to work around your time frame and arrange the activities that you want to include most.

Our Activities have many curriculum links and can contribute to a range of subject topics (Science, Geography, Maths, English, PSHE and History). So whether you want a team building day to motivate, inspire or reward your students or want a multi-day trip to meet specific learning outcomes we will be able to create a package to suit you.

Give students the opportunity to build on friendships whilst making new ones, and also brush off the cobwebs from the school year so far.

After a day of real outdoor adventures, students and teachers alike can relax, recharge, and create lasting memories in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

  • Rustic wooden lodges

Why Schools Choose How Stean Gorge

Outdoor school activities at How Stean Gorge offer a unique opportunity to swap the usual ‘playground’ for an alternative playground filled with natural formations and rivers. The Gorge is a spectacular, steep limestone chasm almost 1km in length and up to 26 metres (80ft) deep in places. This Site of Special Scientific Interest gives children the opportunity to explore Yorkshire surroundings alongside qualified instructors who can teach everyone the ways and make sure everyone is safe and sound.

It’s important to remember that learning isn’t limited to the classroom – outdoor education activities allow children to learn in a unique way where they don’t even feel like they’re learning. With the usual pressures of the classroom environment left behind, it isn’t uncommon for students to come out of their shells and gain confidence during our activities.

Thank you!!

We had a fantastic time at How Stean. The activities were fun, challenging and in a natural setting which we all thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were organised, very well trained and extremely helpful/accommodating. They recorded amazing footage of our trip which the pupils loved watching back and parents enjoyed seeing the challenges their children overcame and the fun they had! We look forward to our next visit to How Stean!

Great Fun!

Went here on a school trip, great location and site for an adventure getaway. The cafe is great and has a glass floor looking down into the gorge. Staff are friendly and good fun. Gorge walking, an abseil, caving and hill walking all on site but my favourite was the via ferrata which is great fun and Includes a zip line too!! Lodge was cosy, clean, great shower in the lodge and plenty of toilets and showers for campers.

Fabulous Day

We had a fabulous day at How Stean Gorge entertaining clients. Everyone was very excited to join us on the day and they certainly weren’t disappointed. Stan and his team put everyone at ease and ensured they enjoyed the activities. It was a great event for a mixed group and everyone interacted really well. We have received excellent feedback and will certainly look to take another group.
