Activity 1

Via Ferrata / High Ropes Course

Clip into steel cables and make your way across the walls of How Stean Gorge. After a practice run, you cross a beam over the water, then a Postman’s Walk, a Burma Bridge and a Tyrolean Traverse, passing right beneath our glass-floored café. It’s the only Via Ferrata in Yorkshire, and one of only three in the UK.

Activity 2

Abseiling

Step back off the bridge and lower yourself 45ft into the gorge below. Your instructor sets up the ropes, talks you through it and stays in control from top to bottom, while you feed the rope through and lower yourself down to the water.

Activity 3

Gorge Walk / Ghyll Scrambling

From the bottom of the abseil, you head upstream through How Stean Beck in a wetsuit, scrambling over boulders, sliding down waterspouts, sitting under waterfalls and jumping into plunge pools. Your instructor picks the route to suit the group and the water levels on the day.

Activity 4

Caving

Helmet and head torch on, you head underground. Expect to wade through water, scramble over rock and slide through mud as you explore passages most visitors never see. Routes are chosen to suit your group, so tight squeezes are optional.

Activity 5

Canoeing

Finish the day on the water. Your instructor teaches you to paddle and steer an open canoe on Scar House Reservoir, a short drive up the dale, with views across Upper Nidderdale. No experience needed, though someone usually ends up in the water!

You will be safely cared for by our professional experienced instructors who use How Stean Gorge for outdoor activities on a daily basis.

Our location and facilities are second to none. We operate directly from How Stean, which means you are straight out of the changing rooms onto your activity, maximising your time on session, no big walks to a venue.

We provide everything you need and are fully AALA Licensed Centre, so you know your safety is our priority.

How Stean Gorge is a spectacular limestone ravine carved out over thousands of years by waterflow and is the perfect location for outdoor activities like via ferrata, gorge walking, caving, rock climbing, canyoning and abseiling. It is geographically unique, as it’s one of the only places in the UK where you can comfortably enjoy both rocksports and canoeing – in a single day! Our multi outdoor activity day is also the only one in the country to include a Via Ferrata course!
