Making Space for Autism and SEN in the Great Outdoors
Nature has an amazing way of boosting our well-being and providing a relaxing sense of peace and tranquility. At How Stean Gorge, outdoor activities are enjoyed by all ages and backgrounds and we recognise that individuals on the autism spectrum and with additional special needs can benefit from spending time in nature. By being considerate and making space for autism in the great outdoors, we can create an environment that stimulates physical, emotional and cognitive health for everyone.
Our specialist team of instructors are fully qualified, friendly and above all sensitive to the needs of the individuals in their group. We regularly have groups where children have specific medical, physical, emotional, and behavioral needs. One-on-one private sessions can be booked by calling our Adventure Team on 01423 755666.
Here’s some of the awesome benefits of taking part in our outdoor activities for people with autism and additional special educational needs (SEN).

The sights, sounds, smells, and textures of the rock formations and the water running through the gorge can help to enhance sensory processing, providing gentle and therapeutic stimulation. Whether it’s feeling the warmth of the sun on their face whilst canoeing, the cool water on their body whilst gorge walking or hearing echoes in the caves, these sensory experiences can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
-
Improving Social Skills
Outdoor activities offer numerous opportunities for social interaction with friends, family, colleagues or classmates. Collaborative activities such as gorge walking, canoeing and caving or following the orienteering trail can encourage engagement with peers and improve vital social skills. By participating in group activities, they can learn how to communicate effectively, cooperate, and build lasting friendships, leading to improved social confidence and a sense of belonging.
