What’s the itinerary?
After a kit check and introduction, we start walking from Horton-in Ribblesdale at around 7.30am. We will head straight up Pen-y-Ghent, one of Yorkshire’s most iconic silhouettes, before descending moorland to Ribblehead. After passing directly alongside the iconic Ribblehead viaduct (perhaps via the snack van!) we then follow the Settle-Carlisle railway line for a while before diverting off to Yorkshire’s highest point, Great Whernside, at 736m above sea level. From here we have fantastic views of our third and final peak, Ingleborough. We drop back down to valley level where a special walker’s cafe is available.
If any group member wishes to withdraw from the challenge at any time, they can. Your guide will also be carrying all the necessary safety equipment.
It’s a short sharp climb onto Ingleborough’s ‘hill fort’ summit for some of the best 360-degree views in the country. We then begin the steady descent down back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale where the cafe and pubs await our weary but satisfied bones! All in all, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge is 24 miles (39km) long with 5200 feet (1600m) of ascent and descent.
