How Stean Cafe

Visit our licensed cafe with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and partial glass floor overhanging the gorge.

The How Stean Gorge Café isn’t your average stop-off. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a partial glass floor hanging out over the gorge, it’s a cracking place to pause, refuel and take it all in. You’re right above the action, with views down into the gorge and out across Nidderdale and the wider Yorkshire Dales.

It’s relaxed, welcoming and built for muddy boots, tired legs and proper appetites. Whether you’ve just finished an outdoor activity, come out for a walk, or simply fancy somewhere a bit different for lunch, this is a café with a view you won’t forget.

Proper food, local produce and homemade treats

We serve casual dining all day, with a menu that covers everything from breakfasts and bacon sandwiches to full meals and lighter bites. Food is homemade, generous and made with local produce wherever possible.

Our chefs put together daily specials too, which you’ll find on the specials board and which change with the seasons.

We work closely with local suppliers, including Kendal’s butchers in Pateley Bridge for our sausages and Brymor Dairy in High Jervaux for ice creams, made less than a mile from the gorge. All our cakes and traybakes are baked in-house, with a mix of classic favourites and daily specials.

Got a food allergy or dietary requirement? Just have a word with the team when you order and we’ll look after you.

A café that fits around your day out

The café is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm and is a popular stop for walkers, cyclists, families and dog owners exploring the area. When the sun’s out, our outdoor seating and sun terrace are hard to beat, with space to sit back, relax and enjoy the fresh air. There’s a children’s play area nearby, bike racks for cyclists, and dogs are welcome too.

Free Wi-Fi is available inside the café and out on the terrace. We also have a glass-floored events room available for private events, corporate away days and larger groups taking part in activities at How Stean Gorge.

Hear from our previous visitors

We’re proud of the feedback we receive from people who stop in at the café as part of their day at How Stean Gorge. Whether it’s a quick brew, a relaxed lunch or a longer pause taking in the views, those experiences are reflected in the reviews we get!

Nidderdale’s Most Reliable Cafe

We live locally and use How Stean a lot for drinks/snacks after a dog walk or cycle ride. Food is good, staff are friendly, views of the gorge are great and the place is consistently open – whatever day of the week. Dog friendly too. Highly recommended!

Afternoon Tea

We enjoyed tea and scones with jam and clotted cream after walking around Scar House Reservoir in glorious sunshine. It’s a great café with home-cooked food (see the specials board) and stunning views both through the windows and the glass floor sections overhanging the gorge.

Fabulous Day

We had a fabulous day at How Stean Gorge entertaining clients. Everyone was very excited to join us on the day and they certainly weren’t disappointed. Stan and his team put everyone at ease and ensured they enjoyed the activities. It was a great event for a mixed group and everyone interacted really well. We have received excellent feedback and will certainly look to take another group.
