What is via ferrata
Via ferrata or “Way of iron” is a method of traversing exposed rock faces safely. Originating in the dolomites of Italy at the end of the 19th century before exploding all over the European alps during the first world war. The system of steel cables and staples in the rock used to protect the climber and make traversing easier.
The Via ferrata course at How Stean Gorge takes you on an adventure along the side of the gorge above the water below. You will climb ladders, cross rock faces and travers high wires. It’s likely that on this course, you will get a bit muddy so it’s important that you know what to wear on Via Ferrata in order to be safe.
What we provide
We provide all the technical equipment required for the activity. Harness, cows’ tails and helmet are the equipment we will provide you with. A DMM centre harness is a comfy harness that is easy to fit. Favoured by alpine climbers for the ease of use and reliability, these harnesses are perfect for via ferrata. “Cows tails” these are connected to your harness and are what you use to connect yourself to the safety cable.
Your instructor will teach you how to use these and you will have chance to master the use on the practice course. Your helmet will be a petzl panga favoured by centres for their ease of use and modular design, this means they are easily cleaned and serviced. All this Equipment is regularly inspected by How Stean’s qualified staff.
What you need to bring
It is easy; all you need to bring are some sturdy shoes or trainers and clothes that you are happy to get muddy and wet. You will be close to the rock faces and some sections require you to crawl if it has been raining recently it will be muddy. Bring appropriate clothes for the weather if it’s forecast to rain bring a set of waterproofs, jacket and trousers.
Other things to consider brining with you; sun cream if it’s a hot day, midge spray in the summer can be helpful on still days and a change of clothes for the end of the session in case you get muddy or wet. You are more than welcome to make use of the hot showers with underfloor heating at the end of the session so bring a towel.
