Discover more about Nidderdale – follow the footpaths and trails

The walks around How Stean Gorge behold some of the most breath-taking scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Known in Victorian times as Yorkshire’s ‘Little Switzerland’ because of its dramatic scenery, How Stean Gorge and its Nidderdale walks are a natural choice to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Off the Beaten Track

Put on your walking boots and delve into untainted Yorkshire Dales countryside, or take your mountain bike and go off-road! Dawdle, stroll or hike – go at your own pace as you enjoy the lovely Nidderdale walk. Follow old drover routes and green lanes across Heather clad moorland and undulating valleys. There’s miles of way marked footpaths, established walks, and trails through some of the best scenery in Britain.

Passing How Stean Gorge is The Nidderdale Way, a 53-mile circular walk in North Yorkshire, which leads you through the highlights of this spectacular landscape. Scar House, Angram and Gouthwaite Reservoirs, as well as Great and Little Wherneside are nearby landmarks and are a real test for ambitious walkers. A selection of maps are available from the shop at How Stean Gorge for anyone looking to try the route.

A Haven for Wildlife

Upper Nidderdale is home to red grouse, plovers, curlews, oyster catchers, and lapwing. You can spot raptors such as red kite soaring high above as you walk miles of stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery. Gouthwaite Reservoir, which is also a Site of Special Scientific interest, is a renowned bird sanctuary and a great location to spot waders and wildfowl. It also has an excellent viewing area. The heather clad moorland is also a haven for redshank and snipe, and great for spotting raptors.

Small Copper Butterfly

There are lots of Nidderdale walks for Yorkshire residents and visitors to enjoy, come rain or shine! Make the most of untouched nature and all of the wonderful wildlife that comes with it.

Walk Through the Gorge

Of course, we mustn’t forget the wonderful walk through the gorge itself here at How Stean. As well as the wonderful activities that we have on offer, visitors can also wander through the gorge and take in the breath-taking natural rock formations and greenery. It’s a beautiful part of North Yorkshire and a truly unique view from most other rural walks. We also have a cafe on site for those looking to make a day of it!
