Family Day Out in The Yorkshire Dales
The ultimate family day out in Yorkshire
Join us for a fun packed family day out! How Stean Gorge is a spectacular natural attraction in the stunning Yorkshire Dales. This steep sided chasm is almost 1 km in length and up to 20 metres (80ft) deep in places. Follow winding paths and aerial footbridges along the ravine, explore caves or experience the new Via Ferrata (literally means ‘iron way’) – one of only 2 in England!
The Gorge
Armed with hard hat and torch, you can discover cave systems and passages, explore the river’s edge at your own pace and venture across narrow footbridges which transport you safely from one side of the ravine to the other.
See if you can find Aslan hiding in the depths of the gorge? The Disney commissioned oak carving of Aslan is at home among the tree lined gorge. As part of the publicity for CS Lewis’s latest The Chronicles of Narnia film Prince Caspian, Marney Hall was asked to create a garden for BBC Gardeners World Live 2008. The multi award winning garden designer won a Gold Award from the RHS panel. ‘Aslan was carved from a single piece of oak wood by David Williams.
If you are feeling more adventurous, explore ‘Tom Taylor’s Cave’ which takes you deep underground. The 300 foot tunnel leads to a cave from where you can climb out and emerge in the middle of the car park! See if you can spot a bat or two?
Make the most of exploring the caves and tunnels – bring your wellies!
When it’s dry, it provides a picturesque, sheltered site for relaxation with the family. After rain, the gorge is even more dramatic! You can see and feel the power of water as the torrents gush through and over the rocks, creating gurgling whirlpools.
The upper parts of the ravine are floodlit in the evenings giving an even more magical wonderland feel to the gorge. The outdoors has never been as much fun!
Via Ferrata
The instructor-led course of iron beams, ladders, chains and cables help adventurers climb, wade and abseil through How Stean Gorge. It’s a challenge for thrill seekers and energetic explorers!
