Camp & Bunkhouses
Home – Camp & Bunkhouses
Camping in Yorkshire.
With 26 tent pitches, How Stean is a great place to meet up and spend time with family and friends. This year we have reduced pitches again to allow more space to breathe.
If you want to bring any music to play please book with another campsite to avoid disappointment as no music is to be played on the site at any time due to campers constantly pushing the limits of when to be quiet. Music is the Marmite factor which causes more upset when camping than any other issue. So once again no music to be played on the campsite.
How Stean Gorge is the perfect base for camping and exploring the Yorkshire Dales. You can find breath-taking scenery, outdoor activities, wildlife watching, heritage and culture, fabulous food and shopping all a stones-throw from our camping site. There is plenty of space in the camp site area for playing games on the grassy slopes and having fun. At night, the moon and stars are your only light so please bring a torch! We welcome group bookings space permitting. However, please read our campsite rules before booking. We do not tolerate rowdy behaviour.
Please note: we do not have any electrical hook ups on this camping site.
Half price admission to the Gorge trail for campers, which you can go down as often as you want. Parts of the gorge are floodlight at night.
If you haven’t got a tent, don’t worry, we have a number of 8-berth troop tents available to hire. These tents do not have separate rooms for sleeping, there is just one large open space.
We have a shower and toilet block housing 5 showers, 5 toilets and 3 wash basins for both male and female. There is also a washing up area with three large deep sinks to wash up in. We do not have any electric points for hairdryers, however there are 2 free hairdryers in both the ladies and gents toilets.
Fresh, home-made Yorkshire fare is served within the cafe. You can choose from an array of hot meals including an all day breakfast, lasagne, scampi, omelette or sausage, bacon, egg and chips. We also have a choice of lighter snacks including jacket potatoes, baguettes, bacon buttie or home-made soup. After your meal you could try one of our desserts, the home-made pavlova has been a firm favourite for over 40 years now or try How Stean Gorge Ice Cream, made only ½ mile away in Lofthouse, you can even see the cows that make it from the car park. Flavours include chocolate, vanilla and fruits of the forest. We also have a selection of irresistible home-made cakes including the Jap which has also been a firm favourite with customers for over 40 years! The summer opening hours for the café is 9am till 6pm. Last orders for food are taken at 5 o’clock however, we can take groups of 10 people or over for early evening meals if booked in advance.
Sun Terrace / Children’s Climbing Frame
Eat, drink and be merry on our sun terrace. There is a children’s play area directly adjacent making it an ideal location to have that well deserved treat whilst being able the watch the children play.
You can order bread, eggs, bacon, sausage or milk from the shop. We also sell toys, souvenirs, maps, books and of course sweets, chocolate, ice cream and ice lollies. Displays of pictures by local artists are on view and for sale in the restaurant.
Free wi-fi is available in the restaurant and on the sun terrace.
Your mobile phone will not work here as we do not get a signal at all, however, we have a Pay phone on site and wifi.
There is plenty of space in the camp site area for playing games on the grassy slopes and having fun. Please do not camp with your tent too close to your neighbour as they might not want to get too warm.
On site we have a bunk barn, our posh tent available for hire, out of the wind and rain.
Off site at Scar there is a Bungalow (Bunk Barn) available.
