What’s it all about?
Via Ferrata – literally means ‘Iron Way’ is a network of metal beams, ladders and cables set in the rocks to help adventurers climb, wade and abseil through How Stean Gorge. You will find yourself wading through gushing water, traversing rock walls, balancing on ladders and beams, abseiling 60 feet off a bridge, sliding through water spouts and sitting under waterfalls. It’s a brave challenge for UK thrill seekers and outdoor enthusiasts!
Each group has a maximum of 8 participants. All safety equipment is provided. So far participants have ranged from 7 years to 72 years. Recommended for 7+ years. Advance booking required. There is no size restriction we have extra large and small harnesses. The only restriction is personal ability.
The duration of each session is approx. 3 hrs. Sessions begin at 10am and 2pm each day. A DVD is filmed using a high spec head cam fixed on the guide’s helmet,however a recording cannot be guaranteed due to potential loss or failure of equipment.
How safe is it?
Each session begins with a safety briefing with one of our 3 approved guides. This is followed by a practice session to assess skills and abilities of each group member and build confidence before embarking upon the main Via Ferrata course. Each guide leads the way and gives instructions for each element of the experience. All activities available at How Stean Gorge are safe when participants adhere to the instructions of the guides. What do I need to bring?
At first you will need comfortable clothing and footwear with a good tread – trainers or wellies will do! You can get quite dirty as you clamber along the rocks so wear items that do not matter ! For the next stage of the experience you will need to wear swimwear under the wet suit. Please bring shorts or trousers to go over the wet suit to protect the bottom – your bottom & the wet suits!
You’re guaranteed to get soaked so please bring a towel.
