Me and the Mrs had a great day (Sept 09) and intend to go back this year with a group of mates and make a weekend of it.
Watch out for the buckets of water while your abseiling :-)

Arrived at Howstean for a meeting with Stan to look at the possibility of arranging some training for Ambulance Staff. Best meeting I have had and only one i have ever got wet in. Will be back with family and collegues in the future.

  • Sara Borne says 19/02/2010

We came up last year to have a look round How Stean and see if it would be possible to do some of our ambulance rescue training there. Had a great time with Stan, and got much more stuck in than I was expecting. Fabulous bacon sannies and a great day out.

  • Glynn & Jane Biss says 25/02/2010

Had a great day at How Stean in August 2009, Stan was great fun and made it an enjoyable family day out. Hot chocolate and food was excellent in the friendly atmosphere of the cafe.

  • Dan says 14/03/2010

Went to How Stean on a stag do and had a blast. Did the Via Ferrata, Abseiling and Gorge Scrambling (Gorge Scrambling in March is not for the feint hearted). Our instructor Stan was a real character and kept us safe and smiling.

Also has great campsite with facilities, friendly staff and a refreshingly relaxed atmosphere about the place. Definitely worth a visit.

  • Dylan Hayes says 14/03/2010

Fantastic weekend camping at How Stean. Our group was made to feel very welcome, and the warm welcome took the chill off camping in March when the hills are still covered in snow. A nice small and very laid back campsite, and one I will return to.

The via Ferrata is brilliant, but not near nearly as scary as you might think. The gorge walk was fantastic, and I can’t wait to try it again, although I might wait for the water to warm up a bit first.

  • Sue Prunty says 22/03/2010

Had a really fantastic day, aching today but all worth it…. we did this for Sports relief…..people were friendly and made you very welcome, hot chocolate delicious and warmed us all up after our expedition up the waterfall. Thanks to eveyone involved in making this such a great day for us. The via ferrata a must for thrill seekers. Thanks again

  • Shelley Stead says 22/03/2010

    Hi stan /ian and team,
just want to express my gratitude for the brilliant day experienced by myself and my colleagues, for our “sports relief” fundraiser.
We all had a fantastic day which far surpassed our expectations, the day was well organised, informative and thoroughly challenging!
I think we all earned our sponsorship funds and will carry with us fond memories of a great day.
    thanks again

Hey I recently stayed for several days at this campsite and took part in numerous activities there with several of my classmates as part of my course, before i had gotten there i was a little sceptical as i was a little bit out of my comfort zone. However soon after arriving, the staff made me feel right at home and always on hand to help, As for the activities there, I had my worries put to ease because of the highly trained Stan, who demostrated a vast knowledge of everything from the Abseil to Via Ferrata, and always kept everyone calm with his own brand of comedy.

In the end despite being sceptical at first, How Stean Gorge and all the staff showed us a great week, and hopefully i’ll return too, if only to admire the beautiful scenary.

    Thanks Again.

Brad – Bishop Burton College Student

Having just returned from How Stean yesterday, we wanted to drop a note of thanks to the staff there for making us feel so welcome.

From booking us in late to making us a couple of sneaky Bacon butties early in the morning they were nothing but accomodating and friendly.

We’ll definitely be going back there, hopefully when the weather has perked up!

  • Jen Johnson says 24/05/2010

We have just returned after a fantastic weekend at How Stean Gorge.

We stayed in the Tipi which was great fun, and Stan and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We even got a pot of tea in the morning bought to us, and the chimnea light in the tipi at night…..even our 2 dogs were made very welcome!

We all took part in the via ferrata experience which was amazing and definately worth a go….none of us had ever done anything like this before, and all really enjoyed it.

There are loads of great walks around the gorge and the scenery is beautiful.

Thanks for a brilliant weekend, we didn’t want to come home and we will definatley be back,

Jen, Oly, Rach, KO ( Fynn and Wilko)

Went camping at How Stean at Spring Bank, with our 2 boys (aged 5 and 10) and stayed for 3 nights. Loved the unregimented feel of the place, and the beautiful setting. Did the gorge walk – twice – which we all really enjoyed. Also, did the Studfold Farm nature trail – 5 minutes walk away – which was a really good afternoon out. If you’re looking for a laid back approach to camping with no frills, this is the place for you. With only 1 shower, however, to share between the site – if luxury is what you’re after it may not be quite what you’re looking for. We had a great time though – and will definately return!

  • Gunna, East Yorkshire says 05/07/2010

Just returned from a weekend camping at How Stean with some friends and the kids. Had a great weekend.

The gorge is beautiful and it was great fun letting the kids explore there at night – they loved looking for ‘Narnia’.We were made to feel really welcome by all the staff, felt right at home and didn’t want to leave.

Just wanted to say thank you for a fantastic weekend, the boys loved making the campfire on Saturday evening with you and are already nagging us to go back – we won’t take much persuading!

  • Jan & Ruth Crichton says 24/07/2010

We have just returned from a 5 day camping holiday at How Stean and just had to say that Ruth and I agree it was the Best Holiday Ever!! the scenery, the welcome, the site, the Gorge! All were just perfect! Every day was a new and wonderful experience! Narnia under the spotlights at night had us both standing with our mouths wide at the absolute Beauty of it! The Gorge walk and Via Ferrata were awe inspiring(if a little scary for us city girls!) The Camp Fire at night that had Stan sitting entertaining us with his harmonica then with the flaming twirling rope tricks followed by toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate – Wow! The cycle tracks around one of the most beautiful countrysides in the UK had us city girls pushing ourselves beyond our usual limits – just to see what was round the next bend! Stan and all his team were so helpful we didnt want for anything on what was a very low budget holiday for us! special thanks must go to Steve who put up with my slow progress through the gorge and Ruths interesting habit of continually falling over into the water!
I can only say – if you want to experience something that will take you well out your comfort zone – you Have to try this!!!! the camp site is very basic – only one shower in the small toilet block and no washing machines or electric hook ups etc but it didnt matter! This was our very first time camping – i only bought the tent last week! – and we loved every minute of our time here!
Thank You Stan and the team! We will be back – thats a promise!
    Jan & Ruth Crichton x

My friends and I have just done the Via Ferrata experience (Whoop Whoop Catterick Campers!!) and we loved it.
Stan the man was an absolute star with us all and made us laugh as well as scared lol.
The Tipee was a brilliant place to stay at the end of it and laugh at what we all got up to that day (and have a glass a wine or two).
Just want to say a big thank you for one of the best experiences of my life so far, would recommend it to anyone. We all love you Stan.

    Dear Ann and Stan,

Thank you so much for welcoming our Rotary group so warmly on Wednesday 6 October. You and all your staff were charming, and everyone was delighted with the quality and tastiness of the food. You gave us a superb finale to a wonderful walk in Nidderdale, and I am most grateful to you for your efficient assistance. We found the Gorge fascinating, and I suspect that you will have generated some repeat business as a result. We will certainly recommend you to others.

Just returned from a marvellous if a little wet weekend at Howstean… am relaxed and chilled out after fine hospitality from everyone at the Gorge! • jim davidson says 28/07/2011

This place is the greatest place I have ever been to me and my best friends luke johnson and carl scraggs enjoyed avery second of it, I will definately be coming bck I especially enjoyed the sneaky bacon sandwiches one word tremendous!!!

  • Hev & Chris Pike says 31/08/2011

We were lucky in that it was just the two of us doing the Via Ferrata and we had a great time. Definitely out of our comfort zone but felt safe and completed the course without any mishaps :-)

The guide was brilliant as were the staff in the restaurant. We are aiming to go again next year with our friends children (10 and 11 by then) who will love it.

Everyone should go and give it a go.

PS: The Ploughman’s was lovely too and the cakes :-)

  • Sam Martin says 11/09/2011

Had the best day on the How Stean Gorge experience – Fantastic value for money and the staff were lovely, and the cake, and the hot chocolate! Loved it all particularly the unexpected swing and most elegant landing on the abseil – special thanks to Aaron for that…Can’t wait to come back and try the climbing and kayaking – might wait for spring though :) Thanks again

  • Chris & Sharron says 08/03/2012

Just had two great days camping at how stean.
Thanks to the owner and the staff in the cafe who
made us feel more than welcome.
The gorge was great and looked fantastic especially
lit up through the night and the cafe served some
    excellent food and drink!
    Looking forward to our return.

  • Steve and Kath Clayton says 18/04/2012

Celebrated Kaths 50th! by doing the ‘ultimate adventure’ via ferrata, abseil off bridge and gorge walk come swim come fall over! freezing cold, wet through, but what a fantastic experience! Thanks Monty ( our guide ) for a super day out.

  • Alison Pendlebury-Brown says 23/07/2012

Have been camping at the gorge for a good few years now. My first ever camping experience in my early 30s was at the gorge and have loved both camping and camping here ever since. How Stean is both mine and my husband’s first camping choice. The area, the views, the friendly staff, the cows and sheep in the adjoining fields, and no light pollution at night. What more can we ask for!!

  • Zoe and Frazer Wykes says 11/09/2012

Just returned from weekend camping for the 1st time as a family, myself, husband and 12 yr old. Fantastic time and the Howstean experience is well worth a try. Scenery is amazing and we live in the trossachs so it must be special!!!!! Would certainly recommend it to first timers and experienced campers!

  • Roger Thorley says 09/02/2013

Stumbled upon this place by chance when I needed somewhere to pitch my tent when I was on a training course in Harrogate.
I can only say what a fabulous place and I can only echo all the comments above about the friendly welcome and the excellent clean and tidy facilities and the wonderful scenery and and I could go on and on.
I can only thoroughly recommend this as the nicest campsite I have ever stayed on.

  • Stanley Beer says 09/02/2013
